Movie 43 (2013)

An oddity for sure, but not actually good enough to ever be a cult favorite of anyone with taste. Honestly, it’s hit or miss ratio isn’t THAT different from Kentucky Fried Movie’s (and most sketch comedy movies that weren’t made by Monty Python), but at least the Kentucky Fried Theater had  a comic voice of sorts. This is akin to randomly clicking around different internet sketches for an hour and a half, tonal coherence be damned. It’s weird to see people like Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts in something like this but in a post-Funny or Die world, the weirdness mostly comes from the question “Who thought this should be a feature film?” rather than “Oh my God, that notable famous actor is doing a crazy irreverent comedy sketch that plays against their image!” In 2013, it’s hard to find an actor that DOESN’T do that. If they could have got Denzel Washington in this, THAT’D be worth talking about.

Can’t deny that it’s pretty funny at points (though Will Graham’s short “Homeschooled” is the only one with a premise you could even call inspired, and a couple, like iBabe or The Catch are utterly worthless), there are too many talented people in front of the camera for it not to be, but it’s just odd to see something so unnecessary try so hard to be edgy or shocking, for no real reason at all. The Seth McFarlane cameo feels like the Rosetta Stone to the whole thing. This is the Family Guy of movies. Only a must-see for avid players of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. C-
